Sealed glass boxes are a hard sell in a city where summer temperatures regularly pass 40°C. This office asks what a modern workplace looks like when it borrows from the jaali.
The brief
An engineering firm wanted a daylit, energy-conscious office with a distinct identity and without the sealed-glass look.
The design
A double-skin facade: an inner glazed wall sits behind an outer brick jaali screen set a metre away. Daylight filters through the pattern while the air gap cools the wall. A planted atrium brings light and greenery to the centre of the plan.
Materials and climate
The screen uses standard clay bricks laid in a rotated pattern, so it is built by local masons without special parts. The structure is a reinforced concrete frame with exposed soffits, and the roof carries solar panels.
