A calm neighbourhood mosque organised around one tall arched opening, filtered daylight and a courtyard for the community.
The brief was for a mosque that felt welcoming and simple, built within a community budget.
The brief
Funded by residents, the mosque needed to hold around six hundred worshippers, a small library and ablution facilities, and to be easy to maintain.
The design
A plain, light-coloured volume holds the prayer hall, with a single tall pointed arch framing the entrance. Perforated screens throw patterned light onto the carpet, and a slender minaret marks the corner. A shaded courtyard and reflecting pool in front give people a place to gather before and after prayer.
Materials and climate
Off-white render with brick and stone detailing keeps costs low. The prayer hall is ventilated naturally through high-level openings, with fans and solar power for the hottest months.
